The Paleo Diet

Not all doctors are obsessive about health
Not all naturalistic doctors pay attention outside of their specialty. It just so happens, I have a strong interest in nutrition and what eating right can solve. Over the last few months, I did an exhaustive review of anatomy systems of digestion, inflammatory pathways and the like. I dug into the literature and research, read books that were all research review and cruised the websites of the AMA and others to see their dietary recommendations. My personal conclusion, without knowing or reading about any "popular" diet strategies was that humans should eat mostly veggies, fruit and most energy calories should come from meat. Once I had established this in the research, I sought programs out that fit into this concept. As it turns out, I came to a conclusion many before me had already done.
The Paleolithic Diet, based on the hypothesis we have all come from a hunger-gatherer society, appears to be the most effective at preventing chronic disease, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and cancer. Although this is very similar to Atkins, it should be made clear that Atkins was designed specifically for weight loss , and while it does include a high percentage of meat early on, you slowly transition into a balance just like the Paleo diet if done correctly. Further, The Paleo diet is a lifestyle more than a diet as is often claimed by those that use it.
A simple and straight forward introduction to this lifestyle is Robb Wolf's The Paleo Diet, which is an inexpensive and relatively short book that has a good sense of humor and keeps the science to a minimum. Quite honestly, if everyone removed grains, beans and sugar from their diet, we would likely have 80% less heart disease and cancer in our society. Does this sound extreme to you? Does it go against the USDA food pyramid, a system designed by agribusiness and not nutritionists? Yes. Does it even go against the American Diabetic association, which suggests 6-8 servings of complex carbs EVERY day? Yes.
Only in the last few years of our entire medical history have studies finally started comparing the standard recommended diet of the AMA and ADA against systems like Atkins. The results are striking. The Atkins group consumes 300 more calories a day, but loose more weight and have better blood tests for cholesterol and fat than the high grain ADA groups, even eating more fat! This is because our bodies are designed to run on lean healthy protein. Over the coming years, industry will not be able to stop university studies from showing dramatic improvements in all health markers using a grain free diet.
It contradicts 50 years of "medical studies". However, those studies actually prove the Paleo diet correct. It is striking how poor the studies on diet are and how many gross conclusions were arrived at with very little evidence to support them. Try it for one month, if you don't lose all excess weight and go off any medications you are on, you can just go back to what you were doing.
